The idea of prison even though initially was largely
punitive to offenders, lawbreakers, criminals and other social deviants in the
society, attention in the contemporary era shifted to how prisoners could
reform for the better, to properly fit into society. This study was conducted
assess the influence of pastoral care on Ghanaian inmates in the Kumasi central
prison. The specific objectives were to identify the forms of pastoral care
services in the prisons, effects of the pastoral care in the reformation of
lives of the prisoners, and the pastoral care interventions and techniques used
by the pastors in the prisons. A case study design was conducted using
purposive sampling technique to select a sample size of 24 participants. The
main data collection instrument was in-depth interview (IDI). The data were
analysed using content analysis with the aid of NVivo. The study found that
pastoral care is done in a group inside the prison’s church, and the forms
include cognitive-behavioral therapy, vocational counseling, the message of
repentance and salvation, substance abuse, aids, and advice, among others. The
study revealed that pastoral care has a positive influence on the reformation
and transformation of prisoners' lives by addressing some of the physical, spiritual
and emotional needs of inmates, which can contribute to their overall
well-being and personal transformation. The study found that the pastors
usually tailor their interventions and techniques toward the general needs of
inmates, such as food, toiletries, security, messages of hope, and other aids
that attract the prisoners to draw closer and to receive their messages of
salvation and advice. The study recommends that policymakers and prison
authorities should encourage more pastoral care services in group settings to
reach more inmates and provide them with emotional and spiritual support.
